I got my Novice license in 1990 and was working the world with a few watts SSB on a Kenwood 520 that I did not know how to tune properly. My Elmer Kennie NU0Z now sk came to the farm, took my mic away and gave it to my wife. He told her “if he tries to get it call me” He hooked up an old Heathkit keyer paddle, sat me down with a QST and had me start sending to him. Ole Kennie died a few years later and never did give my mic back. I have been a CW op ever since.
I should someday study and test for the Extra Class ticket but for now I am having a blast working QRP and building my equipment to use. de Paul N0NBD
