Slow fishing then Good fishing

On Saturday morning at Elsmore I caught a nice gill on the second cast. The wind picked up from the east and I never caught another fish. I caught a TINY gill but he had only clamped down on the tail of the fly and spit it out at the boat. We threw every color to them and no fish was hungry. Sunday morning we went to Buffalo lake and had great luck on small bass and gills. I caught a bunch off a small rock island. Les got the biggest fish at 13".

Sunday July 12 A GOOD ONE!

Les and I went to the lake this morning hoping for a fish catching trip to clear off two bad trips off the book. The bass and blue gills were not biting but the channel catfish were, over by the fish feeder that the KWP maintains. Les caught the largest at something longer than 18 inches as his apron measure was shorter than the fish. I caught and landed two and lost a bigger one. I think I had the largest fish but after a long fight I pulled back a bugger with a straightened hook. We caught them on copper colored bead head buggers. The wind picked up from the north and a thunderstorm seemed in the offing so we headed for home, satisfied that Friday's small fish and yesterday's thunderstorm were equaled out in the book.

Saturday July 11 09

Richard and I were at the southwest cove on Elsmore at 6:30 am because there was a south wind. The cove is protected and fishes good in the wind. We had barely got launched and started fishing when one of those "isolated thunder storms" moved in. There was plenty of lightning and thunder. More than enough to run me off the water. I guess it will take a REAL good fishing trip to wipe off two bad ones. Although, any day fishing is better than the BEST day working.

Friday July 10

Richard and I were an hour late to the lake this morning. We waited at the kitchen table having coffee while a little rain went by. We drove through it on the way to the lake and fished in it as well. The rain went by and the wind swung around to the east and the fish got lockjaw. We caught a few before the wind changed. We threw everything in the flybox at them including stoneflys, olive, black and copper bead head buggers and even a chartreuse pistol pete but no fish of any size would take them. We wrote today off and will try to make up for it tomorrow morning as the weather is supposed to be hot today. We will hit the lake before dawn tomorrow. Richard had to get home and tend his new cat from my shop. Have a look at "Silvio" He is a cool cat!

He was born in my maintenance shop at work and was destined to be "Cat Whispered" by Richard.

July 5th

Les, Richard and I went to Elsmore at 6 am to try our luck again using toon and kick boats. Richard caught and landed the largest fish. A nice bass and had another larger bass hooked but lost him at the lip. The weather was cool and misty and the water was 82 degrees with wind from the north to start. It then switched to the east for a few minutes and then settled in the west north west and the fish got "lockjaw" we threw every thing at them that we had in the fly boxes and they would not have any of them. Richard says " the fish have been talking and know to stay away from our flys."

July 4th at Elsmore

Les and I fished at Elsmore at dawn and in sprinkling rain we caught a ton of pan fish and Les caught one real nice bass. The wind was brisk from the south and the water was 84 degrees. My toon boat and Les's kick boat worked fine. We had been fishing out of his big boat for a while and I forgot how much fun the small boats are. The fish were biting well on montana stone flys and black or olive bead head woolly buggers.
